Functional beverages have enjoyed robust growth across the convenience channel this year, receiving the lion’s share of attention in terms of new arrivals and innovation in packaged beverages. Hydration brands, ready-to-drink teas and carbonated-beverage innovations have also made their presence felt.

An $8.8 billion market across convenience, carbonated soft drinks (CSDs) experienced dollar growth of 3.8% while units were off about 1% during the 52-week period ending July 11, according to Chicago-based IRI. Bottled juices amassed $1.59 billion in c-store sales, growing 3% for dollars while units were off just shy of 1%. Top flavor SKUs included apple, cranberry and fruit juice blends.

PepsiCo’s hydrating juice water Frutly consists of fruit juice, water and electrolytes. A good source of vitamins C and E, Frutly comes in Strawberry Kiwi, Fruit Punch and Apple Grape flavors, with 60 calories per 12-ounce serving, the company says. The beverage is available for an SRP of $1.29 per 12-ounce bottle and $3.98 per four-pack.

Silly Brands

Silly Juice in six flavors

With playful packaging, Silly Juice from Silly Brands Inc. comes in six flavors: Cool Blue Freeze, Orange Cream, Pink Strawberry Swirl, Red Apple Cherry Blossom, Watermelon Fruit Punch and White Grape Burst. The non-GMO and gluten-free varieties contain real juice, no high fructose corn syrup and no added colors. Silly Juice has an SRP of $15.95 per 12-pack.


Izze Sparking Lemonade original

New Izze Sparking Lemonade is available in Original Lemonade and Blackberry Lemonade flavors. The product contains 70% fruit juice, a splash of sparkling water and no added sugar. The drinks are available in 8.4-ounce cans (SRP 99 cents for a can or $3.69 for a four-pack) and 12-ounce glass bottles (SRP $4.99 for a four-pack).


Gatorlyte Cherry Lime, Orange and Strawberry Kiwi

Designed to provide rapid rehydration for athletes, Gatorlyte is the newest hydration innovation from PepsiCo’s Gatorade. The new drink quickly replaces fluids and electrolytes that are lost during workouts, the company says. Gatorlyte is formulated with a 5-electolyte blend, lower sugar and no artificial flavors or sweeteners. Three flavors include Cherry Lime (West and Central regions), Orange and Strawberry Kiwi.


Reed's and Virgil's sodas in resealable bottles

Reed’s and Virgil’s handcrafted soda varieties are now available in proprietary 20-ounce resealable bottles, the first-ever resealable format in the company’s history. The introduction of the 100% recyclable bottles is intended to bring the two brands into convenience and drug store channels nationwide. Flavors include: Reed’s Real Ginger Ale Original, Virgil’s Handcrafted Root Beer and Virgil’s Handcrafted Dr. Better.


Celsius sparkling strawberry guava

Celsius’s newest flavor, Sparkling Strawberry Guava, is carbonated to offer an ideal balance of flavor and energy to support active consumer lifestyles. Other ingredients include green tea extract that contains a specific ratio of EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) to help burn more calories; Vitamin B Icon to regulate cell health and metabolism; and Guarana Seed Extract Icon using seeds instead of roots.


Pepsi Mango soda

Launched in April, Pepsi Mango is PepsiCo’s first new permanent flavored cola in five years. The drink offers bright citrus and rich caramel notes for a blend of cola and tropical fruit flavor, the company says. Pepsi Mango comes in Regular and Zero Sugar varieties, packaged in 12-ounce cans and 12-packs, as well as 20-ounce bottles. The flavor launch also marks the brand’s first permanent release of a regular and zero sugar variety.


Aha Raspberry + Acai and Mango + Black Tea

The Coca-Cola Co., after testing more than 40 pairings to optimize recipes, added two new flavor pairings to its Aha Sparkling Water lineup: Raspberry + Acai and Mango + Black Tea. The flavor combinations offer bold aromatics without sodium or sweeteners and deliver on the brand’s commitment to formulating flavor-forward experiences, the company says. The Mango + Black Tea variation contains 30 milligrams of caffeine.
