From plant-based chips and bars to frozen desserts as an alternative to ice cream, hundreds of companies displayed new products at the Natural Products Expo East in Baltimore.  

The event, produced by New Hope Network of Boulder, Colo., is one of two trade shows featuring natural products across all categories. Expo West is held in the spring in Anaheim, Calif. It is scheduled for March 8-12, 2017. 

Here's a baker's dozen of companies offering new or expanded lines of snacks. 

Soul Sprout Nut Bars

Soul Sprouts Nut Bars

Soul Sprout, a pioneer in the sprouted food movement based in Longmont, Colo., has announced that its six new Nut Bars will contain some of the cleanest and most nutritious ingredients in the bar category. The new bars include three sweet and three savory options, as well as new Almond Butter Bites. Nut Bars are made with nuts, chia seeds, hemp seeds, fruits or cacao nibs and sweetened with coconut nectar. New flavors include Hoppin’ Jalapeno Almond, Sea Salt Vinegar and Sweet ‘N Salty. The newest sweet flavors are Coconut Almond Chocolate Chip, Apple Crazin’ Cinnamon Raisin and Coconut Almond Delight. Bars are already available in Blueberry Burst, Wow Cacao Nib, Cranberry Crush, Charming Cherry Chocolate, Gotta Getta Gojiberry and Go for Goldenberry.

Soul Sprout previously was known as Two Moms in the Raw, and was rebranded in summer 2016. Its products include granola bars, nut bars, almond butter truffles, almond crackers and grain-free cereal, available at natural grocers throughout the United States, as well as online.

Forager Project, a San Francisco juice company, has introduced vegetable chips in three flavors: beets, greens and roots. The chips are made using the pulp or fiber that remains when a fruit or vegetable is juiced. The pulp is mixed with corn-free grains and sea salt and made into tortilla-like chips. The chips are sourced from Forager's own juice pulp, but the company said it hopes to use pulp from other juice manufacturers. The products can only be purchased online for now.

New offerings from Purely Elizabeth include Grab + Go Oatmeal and Granola + Puffs Cereal cups. Both are gluten-free, Non-GMO Project verified, vegan and made with organic ingredients, ancient grains and superfoods. Purely Elizabeth was founded by CEO Elizabeth Stein and is based in Boulder, Colo.

Wrapped cashews (air roasted in their natural skins) are the newest specialty of Karma Nuts. The Dublin, Calif.-based company said its philosophy is simple: "Do Good. Eat Good. Feel Good." It sells wrapped, roasted and raw cashews. 

Hippeas

Hippeas

Hippeas is a new brand of organic chickpea puffs. The puffs are light and crunchy and offer protein and fiber. The puffs are low in calories, certified organic, certified gluten-free, vegan, kosher, non-GMO and available in six flavors.

The San Diego company offers an ice-cream alternative that is low-glycemic, lactose-free, gluten-free and GMO-free. The latest flavors include Brownie Blast, Snickerdoodle Dandy and Banana Pudding chunky pints, as well as Cake Batter and Poppin’ Pomegranate creamy pints. Products contain 150 calories for a whole creamy pint or 300 calories for a whole chunky pint. Arctic Zero contains hormone-free whey protein, fiber and monk fruit, a natural sweetener derived from a melon; and zero artificial flavors, sweeteners or colors.

This San Francisco company's pork rinds are making a debut at the Natural Products Expo East, highlighting new packaging and their newest flavors, Smokehouse BBQ and Jalapeno Cheddar, along with Classic Chili & Salt. 4505 Chicharrones was created in San Francisco by professionally trained chef and butcher, Ryan Farr, after feeling bad about all the waste in traditional butcheries. 4505 Chicharrones are made with cuts of humanely sourced pork rinds with no added antibiotics or hormones. Rinds are kettle cooked in lard to minimize waste and have 7 grams of protein, 0 grams of carbs and 80 calories per ½-ounce serving. Two of the flavors, Smokehouse BBQ and Classic Chili & Salt, are paleo certified and all three flavors are gluten-free.

Think Thin of Los Angeles is showcasing the newest addition to its line of bars, which deliver 10 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber. S'mores bars offer the flavors of graham cracker and marshmallow enrobed in milk chocolate at 150 calories.

Superfood cookies are available in five flavors: oatmeal raisin, chocolate chipster, pecan maple bliss, walnut chocolate chip and almond chia. Featured ingredients include chia seeds, flax seeds, hemp protein, maca, goji berry powder and lucuma powder. Bridgeport, Conn.-based Sustainable Indulgence produces the gluten-free, vegan and kosher cookies.

The newest Squarebar features chunky peanut butter coated in dark chocolate. The San Francisco company describes it as "Little bit sweet, little bit salty, lotta bit amazing." The bars are USDA organic and non-GMO verified, with 13 grams of sprouted and whole grain and 3 grams of fiber. All are vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free and made with coconut nectar.
