5 Gum and Mint Innovations Freshen the Category

Industry watchers expect a comeback in the gum and mint segment of the candy product category as consumers remove the masks necessitated by the pandemic and return to the office and other public settings.

This would come after other segments propped up candy sales in 2020, when gum and mints saw sales slip 22.7% to $3.9 billion, according to the National Confectioners Association’s “State of Treating 2021” report.

In convenience stores, for the 52-week period ending April 18, 2021, gum lost 25.3% in dollar sales and 30.9% units.

To help stimulate excitement and restore relevance to the segment, brands are busy innovating.
