Consumers' Top 5 Halloween Candies

Consumers are prepping their wallets for the spookiest day of the year. Candy splurging for this year’s Halloween is expected to reach $3 billion, while total spending for the holiday could hit $9 billion—the second highest trick-or-treat spending seen post-recession, according to the National Retail Federation.

To help consumers stock up on candy in time for Halloween, online grocer Peapod LLC has released its third annual list of consumers’ favorite candies for the holiday. The list, which analyzes consumer preferences per region, contains a variety of chocolate, sweet and sour candies available in convenience stores nationwide.

Here are the top five trick-or-treating candies, according to Peapod …

1. Snack-size Kit Kat bars

Hershey’s snack-size Kit Kat bars were named the top Halloween candy overall. The chocolate-covered wafer bar was most popular in New York, New Jersey and New England. It was the runner-up in Washington, D.C., took third place in Pennsylvania and finished fourth in Chicago, Wisconsin and Indiana (the Midwest).

2. Snack-size Reese's Peanut Butter Cups

Snack-size Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups finished second overall in consumers’ Halloween candy preferences. The peanut butter-filled chocolate treats were the third-most popular candy in New York, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., and the Midwest, as well as the fourth and fifth top-selling brand in New England and Pennsylvania, respectively.

3. Fun-size Twix bars

Mars Wrigley Confectionery’s Fun-size Twix bars finished third overall in the Halloween candy rankings. The chocolate-covered biscuit bar finished second in New York and New Jersey, third in New England and fifth in the Midwest.

4. Brach's Candy Corn

Brach’s Candy Corn—the only nonchocolate treat that cracked the top five—finished fourth overall. The corn syrup-based candy was the top-selling treat in Washington, D.C., as well as the second-most popular candy in Pennsylvania and New England.

5. Hershey's Milk Chocolate Bars

Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bars round out the top five Halloween candies. The flagship Hershey product was the top product in Pennsylvania, finished fourth in New York and New Jersey and fifth in Washington, D.C., and New England.
