RTD Cocktails Embrace Summer of Opportunity

With restaurant seating still restricted in most areas of the United States, the ready-to-drink cocktail is a growing opportunity for convenience retailers and manufacturers. In fact, several traditionally nonalcohol manufacturers—including the Coca-Cola Co., Sparkling Ice and Reed’s (see next slide)—are trying their hand at hard drinks. Soda-maker Reed’s launched its first-ever alcohol beverage in Reed’s Zero Sugar Classic Mule, a naturally brewed, ready-to-drink ginger mule made in partnership with Full Sail Brewing, an award-winning craft brewer based in Oregon. A keto-friendly take on the trendy cocktail, Reed’s Zero Sugar Classic Mule (7% ABV) contains ginger root and is made using a handcrafted brewing and fermentation process. Containing zero artificial colors, GMOs or caffeine, the canned drinks are available for an SRP of $10.99 per four-pack.

Geloso Beverage Group’s Clubtails debuted two new ready-to-drink cocktail flavors intended for summer-time consumption. Strawberry Daiquiri melds the tang of strawberries with a rum-like finish, while Blueberry Mojito marries fresh blueberries and mint. Both contain 10% ABV and are available in 16-ounce cans.

Containing zero sugar, zero carbs and zero sodium, Canteen Sparkling Vodka Soda from Canteen Spirits relies on a recipe using gluten-free vodka rather than malt beer or fermented white sugar. With 99 calories per serving, five Canteen Sparkling Vodka Soda flavors include Watermelon, Lime, Black Cherry, Grapefruit and Cucumber Mint. All come packaged in six-packs for an SRP range of $10.99 to $12.99.

Pernod Ricard USA’s Absolut introduced a series of vodka sodas and cocktails, both crafted using original Absolut Vodka with natural flavors. Absolut Vodka Sodas are available in Lime & Cucumber, Grapefruit & Rosemary and Raspberry & Lemongrass flavors. With 97 calories per serving and no added sugar or carbs, all three Absolut sodas have ABV content of 5%. Absolut ready-to-drink cocktails feature Mango Mule, Berry Vodkarita and Grapefruit Paloma flavors, with an ABV range of 7% to 10%.

Royal Wine Corp. released one of its most popular Moscatos in a new format: Bartenura Moscato in 250 ml cans. Packaged in four-packs, the drink offers a convenient option for consumers that may not want to open a full bottle. Sweet, slightly effervescent with a 5% ABV, Bartenura cans are available for an SRP of $15 per four-pack.

Meanwhile, outside of wine and RTD cocktails, Heineken USA Inc. debuted the Heineken 15-count multipack, which features 12 cans of Heineken Original Lager plus three cans of Heineken 0.0 at no additional cost. Heineken 0.0 is an alcohol-free lager brewed with a unique recipe for balanced taste, according to the company, and containing 69 calories per 11.2-ounce serving. Heineken Original Lager comes in 12-ounce cans at 5% ABV.
