For every consumer who has taken the pandemic as a reason to refocus on heathier snacking, it seems there are two others who are more interested in indulgent flavors. These trends have given manufacturers license to innovate in both directions of the category.

Barnana

Barnana  plantain chips

Barnana Plantain has grown its line of traditional plantain chips to tortilla-style chips. The new line launched in two new flavors: Himalayan Pink Salt, which mirrors the seasoning of the brand’s Organic Ridged Plantain Chip flavor, and Lime & Sea Salt, a blend zesty citrus and sea salt. The plant-based snack comes in 4-ounce bags for an SRP of $3.99 and a six-pack for $23.99.

South Forty

South 40 sunflower seeds

A unique premium sunflower seed grown in Israel, South Forty Snack seeds are rich, nutty and robust, according to the company. Seeds are roasted and lightly salted, as well as Kosher, non-GMO and gluten-free.

Good Health

Good Health cheese puffs

Good Health, a member of the Utz Quality Foods family of brands, launched Good Health Organic with debut products Baked Cheese Puffs and Baked Cheese Fries, both available in three flavors. The puffs and fries are made with real cheese. The launch is done in partnership with the Organic Valley dairy co-op, with snacks sourced from the co-op’s pasture-raised cows. Organic Baked Cheese Puffs and Baked Cheese Fries are gluten-free and carry the USDA Organic label.

Doritos

Fritolay Doritos

Doritos from Frito-Lay North America offers up Flamin’ Hot Limon and Enhanced Cool Ranch flavor. Doritos Flamin’ Hot Limon builds on the flagship Flamin’ Hot variety with a tangy twist. Enhanced Cool Ranch is packed with more of the original flavor, the company said. Both are available in 9.75-ounce bags for an SRP of $4.29 and 2.75-ounce bags for $1.89.

Royal Hawaiian Orchards

Sea Salt Macadamias

Royal Hawaiian Orchards from MacFarms LLC debuted a new 24-ounce bag of its Sea Salt Macadamias. The family-sized bag provides a healthy snack option that’s gluten-free, and keto-, paleo- and vegan-friendly. Royal Hawaiian Orchards Sea Salt Macadamias are also available in 4-ounce bags.

Chex Mix

Max'd Jalapeno Chex Mix

General Mills has added a Jalapeno Chili style to its Chex Mix Max’d portfolio, which already includes Spicy Dill and Buffalo Ranch flavors. The Jalapeno Chili variety features chile lime Chex pieces and a spicy mix of pretzels, mini breadsticks and crackers. Chex Mix Max’d has an SRP of $2.89 for a 4.25-ounce bag.

Gold Medal

Gourmet popcorn

Packaged in convenient grab-and-go, retail and bulk formats, Gold Medal’s retail-ready prepackaged gourmet popcorn line is crafted in small batches. It is wet-popped with kernels cooked in specially designed oils and seasonings, the company said. Made with a rich coating, the popcorn is gently mixed and seasoned in an artisan fashion rather than commercial spray-on method. Flavors include Old-Fashioned Caramel Corn, Cheddar Cheese Corn, Caramel & Cheese Corn Mix, Movie Theater Style Butter Popcorn and Kettle Corn. The products are Kosher, Halal-certified and gluten-free.
