10 Cool Foodservice Products From the NACS Show

NACS Show

Spicy flavors, “clean” ingredient labels and cold-brew coffee were the three biggest c-store foodservice themes to permeate this year’s NACS Show. But a number of microtrends and unique supplier initiatives also dotted the show floor. Take a trip down the aisles with Convenience Store Products as we serve up 10 of the coolest things we saw in Atlanta.

McLane Kitchen’s banh mi hot dog

McLane Kitchen’s banh mi hot dog

Like at its own trade show earlier this year, McLane was showing off the menu possibilities retailers could unearth using various products available through McLane. This trend-forward banh mi hot dog used Johnsonville’s hot link paired with a mayonnaise-Sriracha blend.

Rich Products Corp.’s filled cookies

Rich Products Corp.’s filled cookies

Rich Products had its entire portfolio on display at the show—exemplifying, like McLane, the broad possibilities for today’s c-store retailer. Its filled cookies, shown here, upgrade a common bakery item with fillings such as peanut butter and jelly, strawberry and chocolate.

Tyson’s spicy portfolio

Tyson Convenience went for the bold with a broad range of spicy items, including mango habanero boneless wings, spicy pepper jack Bosco Sticks and Sriracha boneless wings.

Broaster’s Genuine Broaster Chicken Spicy

More heat emanated from the Broaster booth, where its new Genuine Broaster Chicken Spicy line debuted. The chicken pieces are infused with heat in two steps: with a marinade featuring hatch chili peppers, habaneros and chipotle chili peppers, as well as a spice coating with hatch and habanero peppers.

Ruiz Foods’ empanadas

Ruiz Foods’ empanadas

Ruiz Foods had on display its handmade empanada line under its El Monterey brand. The bake-and-serve or bake-and-hold empanadas have been available in p.m. flavors, and the NACS Show saw the launch of new breakfast flavors to the lineup.

F’real foods’ limited-edition flavors

F’real foods’ limited-edition flavors

It wouldn’t be a NACS Show without a sampling of f’real’s limited-edition flavors for the year to come. For 2017, the blended-treat company will be rolling out Red Velvet Cake, Root Beer and Mocha Chip Frappe flavors.

Jedidiah’s Artisan Jerky’s turnkey program

Jedidiah’s Artisan Jerky’s turnkey program

One of the most unique concepts Convenience Store Products editors saw on the show floor was a turnkey, butcher-style jerky concept. Jedidiah’s Artisan Jerky, from the people behind Tres Picosos burritos and Naughty Chile Taqueria, allows customers to sample the jerky before they buy them. The jerky is then sold by weight and wrapped in butcher paper. A wide variety of jerky, from traditional to exotic, are available.

Land Mark Products/Piccadilly Circus Pizza’s Unburger Pizza

Land Mark Products / Piccadilly Circus Pizza’s Unburger Pizza

Menu mashups continue to drive traffic, sales and buzz at traditional limited-service restaurants, and the Unburger Pizza from Land Mark/Piccadilly Circus Pizza fits that niche nicely. A rich cheese and ground beef base is balanced by crisp lettuce and pickles.

Wakefield’s new branding and packaging

Wakefield’s new branding and packaging

In the Eby-Brown booth, Wakefield’s new packaging reflects both the growing emphasis on freshness and the expanding definition of the c-store consumer. The goal was to create something that conveyed the quality and freshness cues of a sandwich shop, but also something that would resonate well with millennials—and female millennials especially.

Bunn’s Refresh Line

Bunn’s Refresh Line

If you had just one word to describe Bunn, you’d likely say “coffee.” But the company’s real core goes deeper than coffee: water, and the perfection of that water to make beverages such as coffee, tea and beyond. Reflecting that is its Refresh line, a dispenser that serves up carbonated and noncarbonated water, both as a countertop unit or inline. The carbonation is particularly calibrated to retain flavor—thus, perfect for creating a customizable craft-soda line using flavor syrups.
